Is it a good idea to defragment these big USB drives? Let us know how it goes and good luck, but it sounds like a failing drive to me.
I’ll try this out. Or watched others lose it all. Then my laptop froze. Cons Unknown, potentially fly-by-night vendor that only seems to sell to the Future Shop with shoddily re-labelled OEM hardware.

I had exactly the problem described in your 2nd last pararaph, and was baffled, as usual. Proffitt Forum moderator August 9, 9: Some may consider this extreme but they may not have suffered a total wipeout yet. All open applications went “Not responding”.
For people that plug a USB drive in and it looks good in device manager but just doesn’t have a drive letter, sometimes windows tries to give your external comxtar the same drive letter as something else like a CDROM or another internal drive. Hello, I plugged my Western Digital external hard drive into my Playstation 3 and my Xbox so I could stream my movies off of it.
Hopefully some of that will help! Anywho, what you suggested worked wonderfully. The way the drives show up in disk management is bizarre. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? After reading others posts I’ve checked the device manager and the drive does not appear in their either my C drive show up as being the basic drive. Is this feature helpful?

Jebin – Nov 25, at I have the 50gb problem with my external HD, and after reading through this thread I’ve not seen a solution so far. See and discover other items: A smaller set of files is sent off to my mini-server that is running OpenSSH or a secure shell server. I then plugged in USB cable, plugged power supply back into the back of the enclosure, turned it on and my computer found it. Page 7 of 10 Jump to page: FAIL the drive wouldnt be disabled with an X this is still a problem for me anyone have any other tips or tricks?
